One of our presidents made the statement that leads many to believe that success isnââ¬â¢t only what you choose to do with your life; it is where you choose to do it. Immigration is such a relevant and pressing topic in the minds of millions in our growing society. The news constantly covers stories of todayââ¬â¢s youth striving to become what their parents brought them to this country for. Our country is full of promises and dreams of making what we thought impossible, become possible. Illegal immigrants deserve to be part of this country. However, there are many that would counter this argument with arguments such as the following; ââ¬Å"with more immigrants, there is more of an opportunity for terrorism, drug dealing, and a larger influx of criminals entering the country. Immigrants, especially the poorer ones, consume a high amount of government resources without paying a corresponding high rate of taxes. Less-skilled American citizens earn less money and have fewer job opportunities because they must compete with immigrants in the job market.â⬠(Joe Messerli 1) There are many counter arguments to all of these points that are less than valid. Illegal immigrants are not the only group of people that pose a threat to our countries well-being. Generalizing that the vast majority of immigrants pose a threat is a nonfactual statement, and one lacking credibility and intelligence. Through the setting, Hemingway is suggesting that the baby would be a gift as well as a burden, a possibility that the American is unwilling or unable to recognize The ending is left for the readers to speculate. Towards the end, Jig says ââ¬Å"Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?â⬠à This seems to be a turning point in her mind. She does not want any more persuasion. She has made up her mind. The Americanââ¬â¢s silent observation that the other people in the station ââ¬Å"were all waiting reasonably for the trainâ⬠suggests that he is contrasting them with his tiresome traveling companion, who seems to him completely unreasonable (Wagner-Martin, 92). Jigââ¬â¢s final insistence that there is nothing wrong with her and that she feels perfectly fine indicates that she in turn places the blame for their argument squarely on his unreasonableness (Tyler, 77). The characters seem as much at odds with each other as ever. The conflict remains unresolved. 2. Discuss the conjoined representation of women and nature in ââ¬Å"A White Heron.â⬠Sarah Orne Jewetts A White Heron (1886) tells the story of Sylvia, a young girl who is most comfortable living in natural surroundings amid the wild animals and the forest and her brush with a ââ¬Å"charmingâ⬠and ââ¬Å"handsome strangerâ⬠who is an amateur ornithologist searching for a rare white heron. There is a brief magic moment when she gets to see the white heron in close proximity. She is totally mesmerized and though her grandmother and hunter probe her for details, she then decides to protect the heron for she ââ¬Å"cannot speak; she cannot tell the herons secret and give its life away (239). Sylvia represents an innocent, aspiring girl, who is newly awakened to sexuality. She becomes sexually attracted to a charming young man (Roman, 200). à The scientist-hunter represents a mans egotism and arrogance with respect to nature. Sylvias ominous relation to the hunter allegorizes the predicament of young women in Jewetts culture. Though girls desire to transcend their sexual desires they find themselves trapped in often destructive relationships with men due to the prevalent culture. Sylvia has escaped the oppression of a manufacturing town, has gotten free of a great red-faced boy who used to chase and frighten her (229). In the rural setup she dreams of transcendence with the young man. By showing the hunter as destructive in a subtle and scientific manner, Jewettââ¬â¢s tale warns of the dangers in a man-woman relationship. The magic moment that Sylvia experienced was one of flight of the heron indicative of possible freedom (Church, 21). In her affiliation with the bi rd Sylvia finds a form of transcendence that enables her to delay and perhaps avoid self-loss in mans world. Understood from another angle, ââ¬Å"A White Heron dramatizes a girls experience of an inner ego-division into female and male components. While the feminine part of her is in decline, the ego is in the ascendancy (Church, 21). Sylvias turning from the hunter to the white heron symbolizes the success of her absolute feminine nature over the fatal attraction of her masculine ego (Roman, 201). The mounting of the great pine and affiliating with the white heron, symbolically represent her sensual body and its autoerotic implications (Church, 21). 3. How does Wright maintain a duel perspective of both naivete and sophistication in ââ¬Å"The Man Who Was Almost a Manâ⬠? He uses an outside narrator AND the dialect of the characters to reinforce his theme. The Man Who Was Almost a Man focuses on the gun issue. A teenage boy buys a gun his father does not want him to have. The gun is a symbol of manhood. 17 year old Dave accidentally shoots and kills Mr. Hawkinss mule, Jenny. He now owes Mr. Hawkins $50 for a dead mule. Early in the morning, Dave retrieves his gun from where he had buried it and fires the four remaining cartridges.à Later, he jumps a freight train headed north certain he is bound for manhood. Dave is at the tender age of 17. Initially, he desires a gun because he feels that would allow the boys to treat him with more respect. He wants to be treated as an adult and desires respect. However, the child in him is much evident in his behavior as he confesses to his mother that he wants two dollars to buy a gun. His concept of manhood is having a gun. He rushes out like a child when he gets the money. He is tremendously excited to even touch the gun and the cartridges. He waits for a suitable time to try it. All of these feelings show that Dave is still a child at heart (Felgar, 93). Throughout the narration of the story, Wright uses two kinds of language. As a third person narrator, the author uses sophisticated standard language (Wheeler 172). But when he expresses the thoughts of Dave he becomes a first person narrator and switches to the native dialect ââ¬â that is normally used by Dave in common speech. Consider the passage: ââ¬Å"But he had to tell something. Yeah, Ahââ¬â¢ll tell em Jenny started gittin wil n fell on the joint of the plow. But that would hardly happen to a mule. He walked across the field slowly, head downâ⬠. This gives a feeling of self-dialogue from the point of view of Dave. The self-dialogue could be within the man inside him and the child inside him. While the sophisticated language reflects mature perspective, the native dialect is a symbol of illiteracy, childish innocence, immaturity and tremendous self-belief (Wheeler). à This duel perspective of both naivete and sophistication emphasizes the dilemma that Dave undergoes. He is not a boy and definitely not an adult like his dad. While the sophisticated language offers a neutral adult perspective on the situation, the native dialect reflects an immature, unpolished and childish nature within Dave. After firing a shot, he feels a lot of pain in his hand: ââ¬Å"He stood up and stared at the gun as though it were a living thing. He gritted his teeth and kicked the gun. Yuh almos broke mah arm!â⬠This brings out the duality in him very well. Gritting and kicking are mostly adult behavior but the words are addressed to the gun. 4. Discuss the symbolism of the path in `Dead Men`s Path` AND the symbolism of flowers in ââ¬Å"Chrysanthemums.â⬠ââ¬Å"Dead Menââ¬â¢s Pathâ⬠, revolves around the main protagonist Michael Obi who is the newly appointed headmaster of Ndume Central School in 1949. Working towards increasing the quality of teaching and making the schoolââ¬â¢s grounds more attractive, he plans to block a local village footpath that runs across his newly planted flowers and hedge. The local priest warns Obi that footpath leads to the traditional burying ground and itââ¬â¢s considered a very important path for the ancestors and to-be-born children. The death of a young village woman at childbirth is attributed to the blocking of the path. This leads to a mass frenzy and the hedges, flowers and one school building are destroyed. The visiting white supervisor reports in a magnified manner: ââ¬Å"a tribal-war situationâ⬠exists. The path is this story represents the inherited past (Baloganl, 88). The story does not take sides but reports on two sides of viewing this past. The inherited past can be se en in a positive light ââ¬â respecting the path of the elders and carrying it into the future generations. The same inherited past can be viewed as a block to progress in society. à The symbolism of the path in Dead Manââ¬â¢s Path is more suggestive rather than explicit. John Steinbackââ¬â¢s short story ââ¬Å"The Chrysanthemumsâ⬠revolves around Elisa Allen, a middle aged housewife, who is skilled in gardening and especially skilled at raising chrysanthemums. Steinbeck uses the chrysanthemums to symbolize Elisaââ¬â¢s thoughts and ideas of her inner self. Elisa channels her unfulfilled maternal instincts into her garden and in this context, the chrysanthemums symbolize Elisas children (Hayashi, 7). The chrysanthemums also symbolize Elisas femininity and sexuality. Just like the flowers, Elisaââ¬â¢s feminity and sexuality bloom with a little care in the form of appreciation. So when tinker admires the flowers, she feels admired and valued. It makes her tear off her battered hat and shake out her dark pretty hair (60-65). Passionately aroused, she even prepares for her night out with her husband full of hope for a better, more exciting life. By dressing slowly in front of the mirror and admiring her body Elisa is also admiring her feminin ity (Hayashi, 8). However, when she sees her sprouts discarded in the middle of the road the symbolic act devastates her and leaves her with no hope. She realizes that her life is not going to change, and that her femininity and sexuality are never going to be fully appreciated nor understood by Henry. Like the flowers, nurtured with care and protection, yet thrown away in the road, her feminity will also be ultimately wasted when entrusted to the hands of one who does not realize its value (Hayashi, 8). à The symbolisms of chrysanthemums add to the intensity and pathos in the story ââ¬Å"The Chrysanthemumsâ⬠. 5. Compare/ contrast the marriage in ââ¬Å"Shilohâ⬠to another marriage or relationship in ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠Barbara Ann Masonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Shilohâ⬠revolves around a couple caught up in a troubled marriage.à Much to the confusion of Leroy, her disabled trucker husband, Norma Jean has moved beyond the domestic sphere of marriage. Leroy keeps herself busy by embarking on a self-improvement and fitness regime. She is working out with weights, eating Body Buddy cereal, and taking writing courses at the community college. Leroy meanwhile stays home watching television, smoking marijuana, and busying himself with string art and macramà ©. The couple is also silently suffering the demise of their infant son. The repressed grief acts as a barrier between them and finally rips them apart. At the end of the story, when the couple visits the Shiloh battlefield, the site of one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War, Norma Jean tells Leroy of her decision to leave the marriage. Leroy watches her walk toward the bluff of the Tennessee River, waving her arms. The implication, as the story ends, is that Norma Jean is about to leap over the embankment into the river to kill herself. William Faulkners short story A Rose for Emily portrays the idea that the way society perceives its ââ¬Ëstar peopleââ¬â¢ can be both powerful and destructive. Miss Emily Grierson is the socialite of her town who was both admired and highly isolated during the time when her father lived. After her father died, Emily felt free. In Homer Barron a laborer from the north, Emily founded love ââ¬â a love that shocked the town. As time passed the people understood that Emily was happy in this relationship, yet they awaited the day Homer would abandon her. When he disappeared, the townspeople believe he has simply walked out on Emily, but the truth is revealed after her death when they find his body in an upstairs bedroom (Corbett et al, 63). Evidence at the scene suggests that Emily had, on occasions, slept with the corpse. The expectations of society had weighed down on Emily to commit such macabre acts (Corbett et al, 63). There are a few similarities between ââ¬Å"Shilohâ⬠and ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠ââ¬â an intimate relationship between two people can be marred by a personal losses and the expectations society imposes on people. In Shiloh, the couple is grieving over the loss of their only son. In ââ¬ËA Rose for Emilyââ¬â¢, Emily is grieving the loss of her father. The grief makes the people incapable of coming close to each other. In ââ¬ËShilohââ¬â¢ Leroy and Norma Jean Moffitt, are working-class people living in the modern south and hence there are societal pressures of how they should live. Norma though seemingly matured and independent on the exterior is sometimes shown as a vulnerable person. The fact that her motherââ¬â¢s disapproval of her smoking hurts her deeply shows she is a little girl seeking approval (Hal Blythe, 1). Likewise Emily in the other story tries to live up to the image society has for her without actually thinking about the consequences. While the couple in Shiloh is really married, the couple in ââ¬Å"A Rose for Emilyâ⬠is just in a relationship. Ultimately both the marriages have an insecure woman who cannot withstand the stress of being abandoned and an irresponsible weak man who is not able to support the woman he loves in the relationship. How to Give a Great Group Presentation No matter how much you plan (or hope) otherwise, its nearly impossible to make it through your college career without having to do some kind of group presentation. Whether its for an introductory course or your senior seminar, group presentations are part of everyones college experience. And nearly everyone has had a bad experience working and presenting as a group. So just what you can do to make sure that your required group presentation is one to remember in a good way, of course? Step One: Make Sure Everyone Carries Their Own Weight Easier said than done, though, right? This step is the most critical but also the most challenging. From the beginning, however, it can be helpful to outline what everyone will do from start to finish. That way, if someone starts to slack off, its clear whats happening and you can discuss it with the group member, discuss it with the rest of the group or, if necessary, discuss it with the professor. Unfortunately, too, even if people try to pick up someone elses slack in a group, that discrepancy inevitably becomes apparent during a group presentation. And the last thing you want is someones laziness sabotaging your entire groups work, from start to finish. Step Two: Schedule Deadlines and Rehearsals in Advance As a college student, it can be incredibly difficult to manage your time. And no matter how hard you might try, things inevitably end up happening that prevent you from planning well in advance. However, since you know the unexpected always threatens to happen, plan as much as possible as early as possible. At your first group meeting, set a timeline for when things will be done. Schedule group meetings, deadlines, and rehearsals well in advance. In essence: dont plan to cram by scheduling an all-night stress fest the night before. Even if everything goes smoothly during your work session, everyone will be exhausted the next day. And tired group members are much more like to make errors and otherwise self-sabotage the group presentation everyone worked so hard to put together. Step Three: Present Together and Cohesively If youve been assigned to deliver a group presentation, make sure youre having different people present one main presentation, not having different people present different presentation. (And no, having everyone split going through the Power Point slides doesnt count as cohesive.) How can your groups material best be delivered? What presentation strengths do your group members have? What goals must you meet during your presentation? Whats the best way for everyone to come together to make sure those goals are met? Step Four: Have back-up (like an understudy) for each part of the presentation. If youre putting in the effort to have a great group presentation, dont let fate get in the way of all of your efforts. Even if youre dividing up your presentation, make sure at least one other person can serve as a backup presenter for every part of your delivery. Even if everyone is carrying their own weight, you never know who is going to get unexpectedly sick or face a family emergency. If you, as a group, can all sub in for each other, youll not only work to prevent unexpected disaster when it comes to your grade, but youll reinforce your own mastery of the material (and its delivery). Step Five: Do at Least One Rehearsal You may think you can just briefly mention what youre going to cover in the presentation and then be good to go. And while this can be helpful, you might surprise yourself by realizing what you can learn by doing an actual run-through. Even if you think youre being clear, your fellow group members can provide positive, constructive feedback about where and how you can improve. And while that may seem temporarily uncomfortable, its a lot easier to deal with than the permanence of a bad grade. (Side note: When doing your rehearsal, talk about what each person will be wearing. You dont want some members showing up in formal clothes while others show up in shorts and flip-flops.) Step Six: Remember that Everyone is Presenting the Entire Time The main aspect of a group presentation is that the group is presenting the entire time. This means that, even if your part is over, you dont get to just sit back, secretly check your phone, and stop paying attention. Everyone in your group needs to remain attentive, alert and engaged during the entire delivery. In addition to making your overall presentation look better (your professor, after all, will inevitably notice if your entire group stops paying attention by the time the last presenter is up), youll be better equipped to step in if someone is struggling or to answer questions if and when they arise. Step Seven: Celebrate Afterward! Group presentations are such a pain because, well, theyre such a pain. They take a lot of hard work, effort, coordination, and teamwork. Consequently, celebrating afterward is most definitely in order. First, there would no longer be a need for war. With a sense of global community and the accompanying economy there wouldnt be any motivation to wage wars with eachà other. There would be no super-powers, no struggle to attain land or control natural resources. Humans are the only animals in nature that kill each other for reasons of greed and power. How refreshing it would be to finally evolve beyond our current bellicose nature. If we banned together as a world wide society, we could, at long last, live in peace. Next, we could direct our resources and efforts toward fighting the diseases that afflict us. A socialist-based economy would practically eliminate hunger by providingà enough sustenance for everyone, and that would effectively end our battle with malnutrition. Without the political walls put up by governments around scientific andà medical research, we would be able to pool our knowledge and further advance our understanding of medicine. Searching for cures and treatments of diseases would noà longer be a competitive, profitable endeavor. Finally, the only way humans as a race can hope to progress is first by becoming peaceful in nature and, secondly, by joining together and concentrating our efforts on gaining an understanding for where we fit in the universe. We would all benefit from such a focusing of effort. When we shift our attention from the rat-race pursuit of going to work just to maintain what weve acquired, to a more meaningful quest for real understanding, we truly will separate ourselves form the animals. Theà exploration of our universe, for example, is in its zygote stage; we know little enough about the community in which we live. How can we be so egocentric as a race to be on a tiny planet in a vast universe and not explore our surroundings with sincerity, as we fight over narrow strips of real estate? Perhaps through the exploration of space we may encounter other forms of life,à possibly even intelligent. Statistically, it is highly unlikely we are the only place in the whole universe where life exists. Seeking out other forms of life and even communicating with them would move us toward being involved in a universal community. But our first step must be taken here on our home planet. Socialism is this first required step in allowing man to reach his potential. It would provide an environment in which a greater understanding would evolve. We could be free of wars, disease and other problems that plague us today. There would be less need for a government and more resources would become available for meaningful purposes.

Student's Death Raises Concerns about Weapons Brett Schweinberg, a 19-year-old Emerson student and Brookline resident, never imagined that a night intended for so much celebration in Boston could end so tragically. Schweinberg was one of an estimated 80,000 revelers who flooded the streets of Kenmore Square and the Fenway Park neighborhood in the early hours of Oct. 21, following the Boston Red Soxââ¬â¢s ALCS victory over the New York Yankees. ââ¬Å"It was really a happy, fun, cheering crowd,â⬠Schweinberg said. ââ¬Å"It was a Mardi Gras parade with no route and no floats. It wasnââ¬â¢t a violent affair, and it certainly wasnââ¬â¢t a riot.â⬠However, the vibrant atmosphere quickly dissipated when members of the BPD, some mounted on horseback and some armed with less-lethal FN-303 launchers, took action to quell and disperse the crowd. Schweinberg, who was watching the crowd from the beams of Fenway Parkââ¬â¢s left field wall, sustained two injuries when he was hit with pellets from the compressed air rifle. Far worse for Schweinberg, however, was witnessing fellow Emerson student and journalism major, 21-year-old Victoria Snelgrove, suffer a fatal wound to the eye shortly thereafter. ââ¬Å"She dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. She started bleeding profusely out of the face,â⬠Schweinberg said. Several hours later, Snelgrove was pronounced dead at Brigham and Womenââ¬â¢s Hospital. Her tragic death has cast a wave of criticism on the BPDââ¬â¢s decision to use one of the newest less-lethal technologies ââ¬â a weapon the BPD had never used in a field situationââ¬â on a mostly college-aged crowd. The white institutions are found to be reluctant to serve people of color (non-white minority). Institutions are historically set up to serve only white communities. These institutions function on the basis of race. They operate on the policy of segregation. Institutional racism is the concept that one race is superior to other. Organizations and institutions (both government and private) do racial discrimination, marginalizing the inferior faction. Even though the institutions exclusively for inferior race were technically illegal in America till 1863, our areas still have such institutions. These institutions offer their service only for superior faction and ill-treat students belonging to our community. Institutional racism is followed in all organizations, public bodies, educational institutions (universities) and corporations. Institutional racism influences almost all policies, processes and policies (in both governmental and public institutions). Institutions were historically set up to serve only white communities. These institutions function on the basis of race. They operate on the policy of segregation. Institutional racism is the concept that one race is superior to other. Organizations and institutions (both government and private) do racial discrimination, marginalizing the inferior faction. Institutions exclusively for inferior race were technically illegal in America till 1863. These institutions offer their service only for superior faction and ill-treat people of color. Legislations against racism have made institutional racism disappear to a good extent in United States. Ethnic speech in educational institutions is one of the worst sides of institutional racism. Freedom of speech is encouraging racial talk and ethnic humor. It is high time that we put a restriction on freedom of speech so that at least educational institutions are free from segregation. Colleges and universities have a moral obligation to ensure a peaceful, respectful learning environment for all students. It is therefore necessary to come down hard on speech code offenders. All employees and students should be able to enjoy and work in an educational environment free from discrimination and harassment. Harassment of any person or group of persons on the basis of race, color, nationality, origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteranââ¬â¢s status is a form of discrimination that must be prohibited in all educational institutions. Employees, students, student organizations, or person privileged to work or study in the university community who violates this policy must be subject to disciplinary action. This will finally eliminate racial speech and discrimination from educational institutions. Harassment codes do not violate studentsââ¬â¢ First Amendment rights. Why was Stalin able to become leader of Russia by 1926? (7) In January 1924, Lenin, the Leader of the Russian communist party died. Trotsky, the leader of the Red army seemed like Leninââ¬â¢s successor at the time as he played a major role in the civil war. Meanwhile, Stalin held two positions: Peopleââ¬â¢s commissar for Nationalities (responsible for the different nationalities in the Soviet empire) and General Secretary (responsible for the day to day running of the party. He was also a member of the Politburo, the party leaders who ran the country after Leninââ¬â¢s death.They consist of Stalin, Trotsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Bukharin, Rykov and Tomsky. As Leninââ¬â¢s funeral was organized by Stalin since he was regarded as the partyââ¬â¢s administrator because of his position as General Secretary, Stalin was able to deliver the oration. This enabled him to portray himself as the chief mourner, and heir to Lenin. Stalin also telegrammed Trotsky the wrong date. Many saw Trotskyââ¬â¢s absent as disrespect for Lenin who had assumed a God-like status so his reputation was damaged. As a result, Leninââ¬â¢s funeral gained Stalin support and made Trotsky unpopular, contributing to his success in being the leader of Russia.Apart from that, the fact that the Politburo decided not to publish Leninââ¬â¢s Testament which contains criticisms of them also contributes to Stalinââ¬â¢s success. This is because in his testament, Lenin had wanted Stalin removed from his position. Members of the party may not have supported Stalin if they had read the testament containing criticisms of him. They would probably support Leninââ¬â¢s desire for Stalin to be removed from his position. Apart from enabling Stalin to gain support during Leninââ¬â¢s funeral, his position as General Secretary also contributes to his success in becoming Russiaââ¬â¢s leader in many ways.As it enabled him to access personal files of party members, Stalin gained information wh ich he could use against his rivals. Furthermore, it also gave him the right to appoint new party members so he appointed his supporters. During Lenin Enrolment between 1923-5, over half a million new members joined the party as it gave them privileges. This made them loyal to Stalin as he had allowed them into the party. New members could easily identify with Stalin because of his humble, peasant background and support for Stalin grew. On the other hand, Trotsky was unpopular.He came from a wealthy Jewish background and had a late conversion to Bolshevism. He was an intellectual who appeared arrogant. He also did not cultivate support but worked alone. This could be because of his poor judgment regarding other people. Trotsky also believed in the ââ¬ËPermanent Revolutionââ¬â¢ but in contrast, Stalin promoted ââ¬ËSocialism in one countryââ¬â¢. Many feared that Trotskyââ¬â¢s idea of world revolution would ruin Russia so support increased for Stalin. In 1924, Trotsky sa id the partyââ¬â¢s bureaucracy was too big and was working for its own benefit.He was isolated by Stalin as Stalin had joined with Zinoviev and Kamenev to form the ââ¬ËTriumvirateââ¬â¢. This happened before Leninââ¬â¢s death and the aim of this alliance is to prevent Trotsky from being the next party leader. They campaigned against Trotsky by publishing his disagreement s with Lenin during 1903-7. They also used Stalinââ¬â¢s position as General Secretary and the 1921 ban against factions to remove Trotskyââ¬â¢s supporters from their influential positions. This led to Trotsky being constantly isolated and outvoted.In 1925, Trotsky was forced to resign from his position of Commissar for War. Stalin, as a member of the ââ¬ËTriumvirateââ¬â¢ has partly defeated the Left Opposition. However, In April 1926, Zinoviev and Kamenev realized that Stalin is exploiting his position as he used it to appoint his supporters into the party. They joined forces with Trotsky to f orm the United Opposition. They planned to restore Party and Soviet democracy and end the NEP (New Economic Policy). They were defeated in 1926 at the central committee meeting because Stalin called in his support and banned them from speaking.He also used his control of Party Congresses and elections to outvote them. They worked secretly but were then accused of factionalism (breaking the party) and were expelled from the party. The United Opposition was successfully defeated by Stalin and the party is now full of his supporters. Improving Student Behavior With Behavior Contracts Behavior contracts that describe appropriate replacement behavior consequences and rewards can really help students succeed, eliminate problem behavior and build a positive relationship with the students teachers. Contracts can eliminate the never-ending battle of wits that begins when a student engages the teacher and the teacher gets hooked. Contracts can focus the student and teacher on the good behavior rather than on the problems. A behavior contract can be a positive intervention to avoid the need to write a Behavior Intervention Plan. If a childs behavior merits a check in the Special Considerations section of the IEP, federal law requires that you conduct a Functional Behavioral Analysis and write a Behavior Intervention Plan.Ã If another intervention can prevent the behavior from getting out of control, you can avoid a lot of work as well as possibly needing to call an additional IEP team meeting. What Is a Behavior Contract? A behavior contract is an agreement between a student, their parent and the teacher. It spells out the expected behavior, the unacceptable behavior, the benefits (or rewards) for improving behavior and the consequence for failing to improve behavior. This contract should be worked out with the parent and the child and is most effective if the parent reinforces the appropriate behavior, rather than the teacher. Accountability is an important part of the success of a behavior contract. The components: Participants: Parent, Teacher, and Student. If both parents participate in the conference, more power to them! It is clearly an indication that they will support your effort. If you are in a middle school and other teachers besides the special educator will be enforcing the plan, they all need to sign off on the contract. Finally, the student should be consulted, especially about the rewards. What is a fitting reward for proving that they can improve their school behavior?The Behavior: Describing the behavior negatively (stop hitting, stop speaking out of turn, stop swearing) will focus on the behavior that you want to extinguish. You need to be sure that you are describing the replacement behavior, the behavior you want to see in its place. You want to be rewarding the student for the behavior that you want to see, rather than punishing the behavior you do not want to see. Research has proven conclusively that punishment doesnt work: it makes a behavior disappear temporarily, but th e minute the punisher leaves, the behavior will reappear. It is important that the replacement behavior serves the same function as the behavior you with to eliminate. Raising your hand doesnt replace calling out if the function of calling out is to get attention from peers. You need to find a behavior that will also provide appropriate attention. Data collection: How will you record when wanted or unwanted behavior has occurred? You may have a student self-monitoring protocol, or even a teacher checklist or teacher record sheet. Often it can be as simple as a three by five-inch note card taped to the desk, where the teacher can place a star or a check for appropriate behavior.The Reward: You need to be sure that you establish both the reward and the threshold for getting the reward. How many inappropriate behaviors are allowed and yet the student can still earn the reward? How long does the student need to exhibit the behavior before the student earns the reward? What if the student backslides? Does he or she still get to keep credit for the success that preceded it?Consequences: If the behavior you are targeting is problematic and can potentially inhibit the success not only of the student in question, but for the whole class, it needs to have consequences. The consequences also need to kick in when a certain threshold is me t. In most cases, the success of exhibiting the replacement behavior, along with the praise and positive emphasis that should accompany the success, it shouldnt need to be instituted. Still, if a behavior disrupts the classroom and puts other children at risk, the consequence needs to be one that returns peace to the classroom and makes the other children safe. It may be to remove the child from the room, or move the child to the quiet corner. Signatures: Get everyones signature. Make a big deal about it, and be sure that you keep a copy of the contract handy, so you can refer to it when you want to either motivate or redirect the student. Instituting Your Contract Be sure that everything is in place before you begin the contract. How will the parents be informed and how often? Daily? Weekly? How will parents be informed of a bad day? How will you know for sure that the report has been seen? What is the consequence if the reporting form is not returned? A call to Mom? Celebrate Success! Be sure to let the student know when you are pleased when they are having success with their contract. I find that often the first few days are very successful, and it usually takes a few days before the there is any backsliding. Success feeds success. So be sure to let your student how happy you are when they do succeed.

The ancient Romans and Greeks supported euthanasia after the interpretation of the Hippocratic Oath that was written around 400 B.C. They believed that the persons life should not be preserved if this person has no interest in life. Hence, voluntary euthanasia was not banned in the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. However, committing Suicide as well as helping others to commit suicide was considered as a criminal act by the English jurisdiction during the 1300s. Euthanasia faced the first direct law against it in New York at the 1828 which was known as the Anti-Euthanasia law. Euthanasia like Abortion had become a major issue for debating in the following decades until the recent days .(Sandhyarani, 2001). Nowadays, all dictionaries and references define euthanasia as mercy killing of patients in severe incurable pain. Oxford dictionary for example, has defined euthanasia as: the painless killing of a patient suffe ring from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. The way these definitions were defined came from the origin of the word Euthanasia, where Euthanasia is a Greek word came from the 17th century to combine two words, Eu which means well and easy and Thanatos meaning death.(Oxford dictionary, 2010). Euthanasia nowadays can be categorized into many different forms and types, the first and most common one is the active voluntary euthanasia where the patient is mercifully killed with his own will and request, its also known as the assisted suicide. Other different form is known as the involuntary passive euthanasia that let the patients die without their own request, this kind is known for patients who are in comas or unable to talk or communicate with others.(BBC, 2009). With the current debates and developments in the world, euthanasia is being discussed globally, legalized in some countries and still discussed in others. Netherland was the first country in the world to legalize Euthanasia in 2002, followed by Belgium at the end of 2002 and some parts in the United States of America. Switzerland on the other hand allows the physician assisted suicide in special cases but the euthanasia is still not legal in this country. What must be known about the laws of these countries is that they are strictly standardized for euthanasia as euthanasia is being applied only to specific kinds of patients. Euthanasia is indeed one of the most controversial issues to date. Taking both sides, supporting and opposing euthanasia in the society, doctors and governments into considerations, the main question now centers on whether Euthanasia is the right act to consider on the cases with no cure and whether euthanasia should be legalized. The process of painlessly helping a terminally ill person to die should be legalized as its a merciful act that offers dignity and compassion at lifes cruel end. People who are euthanized are going to die anyway. However, by legalizing euthanasia, they can be saved from suffering terrible pain.(Friedman, 2010) Therefore, governments should not stand in the way of letting severely ill people with no chances in getting cured to end their lives legally by Euthanasia. The following research project will hereby focus on the reasons why euthanasia should be legalized, what we can prevent and gain by legalizing euthanasia, effects of euthanasia and its future. The time frame used in this research project is from 2000 till date, the research is showing the latest ideas and arguments presented in the world where euthanasia is still developing and arguments involved in this issue are leaning more towards legalizing euthanasia day after day. 2.0 Body of Content 2.1 Euthanasia is a Freedom of Choice: Just as I shall select my ship when I am about to go on a voyage, or my house when I propose to take a residence, so I shall choose my death when I am about to depart from life. Moreover, dignified death is one of the fundamental rights people are supposed to have as being part and parcel of the fundamental rights to life. According to the Daily Telegraph (2008), Chantal Sebire was a French woman diagnosed with a rare type of cancer (a malignant neoplasm of the nasal vault) in 2002, her tumor developed and reached a point where it cannot be stopped or cured, it made sever deformities in Sebires face taking away the senses of smelling, tasting and eventually sight from her. Moreover, Sebire was suffering from horrible pain; she said a normal human would not allow an animal to go through. She appealed to the French court asking for a permission to have an assisted suicide as she could not bear the pain anymore. However, her appeal was rejected as euthanasia is not legal in France. Two days later Chantal Sebire was found dead as she committed suicide in her house after her appeal was re jected. It can be seen from that case that this way of crossing into death was unfair as it was more scary and painful experience than a regulated euthanasia. In Sebires case as well as other similar cases where cure is not found for patients, patients are going through horrible pain and they are going to die anyway, governments should not stand in the way of those severely ill people with no cure or treatment to end their lives legally by assisted suicide. Therefore, the life of those patients is their choice and they have the right to continue living or die peacefully. The pursuit of happiness is the pursuit of relief from pain and suffering. (Cockeram, 2007). By having the superior power in keeping the lives of patients with no chance in getting well or having cure is not giving them relief or even happiness, it is like holding their lives, watching them suffer at the last moments of their lives and locking them in a life they are not having since they have lost their senses, feelings or even conscious. Opponents of euthanasia argue that euthanasia is a cruel act and a human enforcement to end other people lives without their permission. Lozano mentioned that the Vatican believes that ending lives of severely ill people even the premature babies who are gravely ill by euthanasia is an illicit act as well as act of cruelty. (CNA, 2006). Therefore, opponents believe that euthanasia would violate the Gods gift of life and enforce in ending lives of people who are not able to communicate with others. However, according to the article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. Article 5 adds No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. If no one shall be subjected to torture, then why do we have to watch them suffer? (Euthanasia UK, 2007). Most of the people who choose euthanasia are those patients who suffer from diseases that cause a lot of pain and cannot be treated. If those patients choose not to bear the pain, they should have the right to do so. (Bose, 2011). It is the right of those patients with no cure to choose their own life and death. Other kind of brain dead patients who are in irreversible coma and cannot communicate have no chances in getting back to life or even getting well as in most cases their brains are damaged, it is in their favor as well as other patients favors with chances in getting cured to be euthanized, providing them with the mercy killing doesnt mean it is a cruel act against their will but it is ending their suffer, releasing their locked souls in no life and lowering the expenses their parents or relatives have to pay for hospitals only for keeping them alive but unconscious through machines. Euthanizing such patients can be by shortening the amount of oxygen or food given to them through machines and tubes. Therefore, euthanasia should not be considered as a cruel act but an act of mercy that gives patients and even their parents the right to choose life or death at the time of suffer and inevitable death.

The Doctrine of Ethos states that music effects character and emotion of man by way of morals or ethics. It was arranged into certain scales, each with a certain characteristic. Specific scales were said to be able to inspire rage or sadness. Some were said to inspire happiness, and one was even said to weaken the mind due to its simplicity. Greek music, of which the Doctrine of Ethos specifically talked about, wasnââ¬â¢t just solely instrumental. Improvising, they usually incorporated lyrics and even dance. Music was studied by the Greeks on a level that would be considered excessive in our society by all but our musicologists, ethnomusicologist, music theorists, and a small minority that take their love of music to more than just an aesthetic level. In our world, a world of empiricism and skepticism, the Doctrine of Ethos may sound a bit hard to believe. It may even sound magical and mystical, but I feel that it has some deep roots in truth. Philosophers, musicians, and even th e layman have all theorized about the effect of music on the mind, body, and soul. After all, as William Congreve said in his The Mourning Bride, ââ¬Å"Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.â⬠It is difficult to show the effects of music on the individual, but it is easy to see how the individual chooses genres of music based on mood. The soldiers in Iraq, for instance, listened to a song by the band Drowning Pool titled, ââ¬Å"Let the Bodies Hit the Floor,â⬠over the speakers in their tanks. After listening to the song it would be easy to see that they didnââ¬â¢t just choose the song because they thought it pertained to their current situation. The song is loud, fast, and hard. The song fueled the soldiers. I donââ¬â¢t think that it made them into bloodthirsty savages, but I do think that it pumped them up with adrenaline. Walk into any random Goldââ¬â¢s Gym and Iââ¬â¢m sure you will not hear classical or new age music, but instead some sort of rock. David in the Bible played music to soothe Saul. Due to Davidââ¬â¢s harp and voice Saul calmed down and fell asleep. This is present even in todayââ¬â¢s society. After work, school, or any other long, e xhausting event, it isnââ¬â¢t uncommon for people to go home and put on some soothing music in order to cure them of their horrible day.

Education For All Essay
Introduction There is so many reasons and so many ways that education can benefit people all around the world. It is stated that schooling for 1 year can increase one personââ¬â¢s income up to 10%, and that is only with 1 year of education!. Education makes people healthier by arming them with knowledge that they can use in their daily lives to protect themselves with, so that they can know how to clean and take care of themselves better. It also saves more children because educated mothers know how to take care of their children better since babies are fragile and very hard to take care of and willà decrease the children mortality rate. Education also teaches people female rights that are often ignored in poorer parts of the world because they have a different view of women. With education women will know their own rights and stand up for themselves instead of doing nothing. Having education for all people around the world is very important because it is the tool to combat poverty. Education will surely decrease poverty all around the world if there was education for everyone, that is not just my opinion, there are so many facts that prove that education will help people in need. Global Perspectivesà Governments all around the world has been onto education for all, realizing how important it is to everyone because it can improve the world by a lot, so they decided to set up 6 goals that are related to education for all. These goals will help get the people in poverty basic education that they deserve. These goals will hopefully bring decrease poverty and hunger around the world. Those 6 goals will increase childhood care and also expand on childhood education. They also aim towards providing mandatory primary education for everyone so that everyone has basic education to arm themselves with. The goals will also push for learning life skills for everyone so that more people will be more willing to learn. Increasing adult literacy is also part of the agenda in the education for all goals. Improving the quality of education is one of the aims because there is no use having education for everyone if the quality of education is really low. I think that these goals are all really good goals to follow and if all the government stick to the goals and all the goals get achieved, there will be no more poverty because of education! National/Regional In China, Shanghai tried to give more access to all students and more support forà students that are failing or finding education hard. Shanghai aims to reduce the work that students have to do so that they can do better a school environment, and also create better preschool education to make sure students will do better in primary school. This goal is set to be reached at 2020. Most of the children that arenââ¬â¢t doing well in school are children of people who are migrant workers who didnââ¬â¢t have public education before. It is estimated that around 20% of students are the children of people that are migrant workers. Educational achievement is one thing China really cares about. Contrary to other countries in China, Shanghai realizes that minority students get good education too so Shanghai now has a policy letting migrant student attend public schools with other Shanghai children. There is a system that basically where a special type of school that has more sources than other schools and they accept less students, these schools are called ââ¬Å"key schoolsâ⬠. This system is really outdated and it is less popular now. Shanghai removed this system because it promoted education inequality and made a policy where students had to attend their local school so it will be more equal. Local Perspectives In Hong Kong, they have rules that promote education for all so that everyone will be equal and no races will be left out just because of their race. In Hong Kong, schools canââ¬â¢t discriminate against your race by refusing to take in your child, or admitting your child in worse terms. They cannot deny access of any benefits, facilities or services that they give to other students. It is also against the law for any school, teacher or students to harass other children because of their race. There are 6 kind of schools in Hong Kong. Government schools, Aided schools, DSS Schools (Directà Subsidy School), Private schools, ESF (English Foundation School), International School. The government, DSS and aided schools use a local curriculum while the other schools use curriculums based on themselves and what they believe in so this can vary a lot depending on the school. The government has a 6 year primary education plan that means you have to attend primary education for 6 years that is a necessity but it can be free if you are attending government schools or aided schools because those schools are funded by the government and not by any private owners. Personal Perspectives. I think that education for all is very important. There are social benefits from having education. There has been stats surveyed that people who have received college education have generally longer lives and will take better care of themselves. The people who receive education will have more self esteem and will be more satisfied with themselves. The people with good education will also be better at solving day to day problems that will make his life much more easier on a daily basis. Educational should be for both genders equally because Education should also be for everyone, it isà also more important for females because the education that the women received has more of an effect on her family and their generations. It doesnt only help herself, she also helps her family. That is why educating women is a good way and a first step to solving poverty on a global scale. There has been research done that married women will have smaller and healthier families. Educated women know the significance of health care and how to get it for her and her family. Education also helps women be more confident about herself and know that she has equal rights and both genders are equal. Education of parents are also linked to the education that their children are gonna receive and mothers is more influential than the fathers so mothers education is important. Educated women are likely to have less mistimed birth and unwanted babies so they will be prepared when they actually decide to have a baby. Education are being received by both genders now because equality of both genders are being recognized as important. Being education gender equal is one of the goals of the millennium development goals that is due in 2015. There are groups like UNFPA that advocate for universal education. They help try to make education more equal in more underdeveloped countries so more countries understand the importance of reducing the gender inequality gap. Future Scenarios and Possible Courses of Action I think that the governments all around the world need to prioritize education for all and bring it higher on their to do lists because it is easily one of the most important things to achieve and it will so many problems on earth. We should also make sure that there will be less sexism in this world because in the poorer areas, women are considered less equal than men. If a family had a daughter and a son, and could onlyà afford education for one, they will choose the boy because they think the girl is flawed compared to the boy. There should be more policies that empower women and make them more important because right now, people are sexist and still think that men is better than women even though its not true and there are information that suggests women can help solve poverty if more women get educated. I think that the governments in poorer places need to set up more event that promotes education so that everyone knows how important education is so they will emphasize on education for their children. The government should host events to get people to endorse and embrace education so children will want to go to school and work hard. I think there should be cheaper transport in poorer places so that children can get to school much more easily and in a cheaper way so the price of transportation wonââ¬â¢t deter them away from going to school. Young people who received formal education should teach people around them so he can spread education to more people. I also think that the more developed countries should use some of their money to fund some organisations that help the less developed countries build schools andà education so more people will have proper education because everyone has the right of education and education is considered a basic human right for a long time. Personal Response I think education is really important because education also plays an important role in reducing world hunger. Child malnutrition is one of the highest death causing problem there is in underdeveloped countries. It is estimated that about 1 billion people do not have access to proper nutrition that is needed to have a healthy life. One of the most important factors of reducing world hunger is educating women, which isà even more effective than directly giving them food. In Bangladesh, if a mother is illiterate, there is a higher chance that her child will be malnourished. Education can help increase food production in countries by giving people the knowledge they need to produce more food and also to increase their knowledge about health. There are studies that show that education directly correlates with food security. In Bangladesh, as women with higher forms of education, there is a much lower chance that they have malnourished children. Research also shows that people with higher forms of educationà can produce more foods than ordinary farmers with no knowledge because they might adapt smart strategies that can help produce more food than farmers that use the same strategies over and over again. Only few years of primary education can already boost a farmers output by 9%. In saharan africa, investing in educating women can potentially boost the output of the food by about 25% which is a really higher number. AIDS/HIV is a really huge problem in still developing countries and one of the most important ways of preventing or help reduce the number of AIDS/HIV is education. According to the global campaign for education, ââ¬Å"If all children received a complete primary education, the economic impact of HIV/AIDS could be greatly reduced and around 700,000 cases of HIV in young adults could be prevented each year, seven million in a decadeâ⬠That just shows that education is key to stopping and preventing AIDS/HIV from spreading even more.
